House Warming Invitation

So here we all are, the Khorog ten. From left Tobias, Marianne, Ramon, Patrick, Victor, Moniek, Me, Hanne (aka Honkanen) Pete and Arian. Photograph: Arian Van Helden

I am procrastination incarnate. So much to write but where to start… I think to myself, I know, I’ll just organise the desk in our hostel room here in Bishkek before I begin…so nice to have a desk to tidy…oh, now the rest of the room looks a mess, better just sort that out… now I’ll just poke at my healing knee some more before I settle in my seat…oops… need to wash the blood from my trousers before it really stains… I’ll just look through my itunes to find the perfect writing music to aid my flow…What am I doing?! it’s not as though I have a shortage of things to write about, why can’t I just get it out? Have I become like this or have I always been this way…? I’m plumping for ‘always this way’… desk: check, knee: check, music: Neil Young LET’S GO MARY!!

So the guys you see pictured above are our rolling buddies on the trip, two have rolled away on different paths, that’s Victor and Patrick, two more have rolled on ahead of us, our guiding lights Tobias and Marianne, Ramon and Hanne are in the hostel with us aiding our explorations into finding the best (and cheapest!) restaurants Bishkek has to offer, and who should roll into the hostel courtyard at lunchtime today but the wonderful duo Arian and Moniek!!

Pre-noon voddie anyone?! Moniek, Me and Hanne

Why yes please!! They sing! Ramon, Pete and Arian

The colourful mountains
You just don’t get tired of having your breath taken away, and it’s not the altitude (well sometimes it is…) Photograph: Ramon and Hanne

The Pamirs truly are an incredible sight to behold, I felt an amazing amount of privilege riding there, a tiny soul in an epic place. At one point during the day we made the 4655 metre pass I was pushing onwards on my own and a sudden rush of euphoria surged through my whole body, my flesh was tingling and tears pricked my eyes. It dawned on me that I, me myself and I, had made it all this way by bike to here, this overwhelming expanse of mountains. Me. As I soaked in the vista and peddled on I called out ‘I wish you could see this!!’ and then I just started to really laugh. It’s a funny sensation calling and laughing when it is only you there, feels great actually.

Our home for the past year or so
Our cozy portable home for the last year or so that has treated us so well… but now it belongs to someone else, that’s right… WE ARE MOVING! Photograph: Arian Van Helden

Amongst all the delights that Bishkek has to offer on it’s leafy streets, it also has a FedEx office that Pete and I were keen to find as it held within a package containing our new home! That’s right folks, we are now the proud owners of a Hilleberg Nallo 3 GT, all thanks to Marian and Jerry back in Guernsey. There is space enough for cocktails and canapés with our new porch area, ample room to cook up a feast in the new kitchen (also known as the porch area!) And a vacuous king size bedroom to boot! Feels like the camping equivalent of Claridges. Guests are welcome, you just have to bring a bottle of vodka to the party, this being the tipple of choice lately…can we tempt anyone?!!xxx

  2. Mines a gin & french, darling.

Glad to hear you are moving up in the world, in more ways than one, sounds splendid.

Those mountain photos are fabulous – it looks so unreal, like a painted film set. Beautiful colours.

I’m procrastinating by reading this, so thanks for helping me to give myself a good talking to. Deadlines, deadlines…

Hope the knee is better, sounds painful! I fell down a friend’s stairs last week, and I have a bruise of a baby’s head on my thigh. Dull domestic injury, not nearly as exciting.

    Love, always Xx

Bean! Poor thing! Did a gin and french have anything to do with the incident?? I stacked it trying to avoid a huge truck full of hay that was too wide for the road, that was before any vodka, but I sure needed it afterwards! I’ve also had cars spinning 360s towards me…the drivers here are, to put it bluntly, sh*t… and stupid. So I bought a new helmet 3 days ago. Skype me before Monday if you can as we now have our Chinese visa and will be heading off again soon xxx

  5. Nah, rarely these days, I’m afraid. If I was, the conversation would be very disappointing.

I’m at my worst in the mornings, but will get jacked up on coffee first. So, 0900 BST suit you? We’re planning on walking up a big hill anyway. Totally old. I get excited about making the most of the day by getting up early. I’m quietly mourning my youth.

Great news on the visas, btw!

    Bisous Xx

Do you still have your bike to get around the island on? 7. I think we agreed Kendall & Thompson!
All very much still the same in Gsy except it seems that everyone got married and had babies so I have to stay in with my parents on a Friday night!! So am very much missing you being here…
Of course I’m back on my bike! So refreshing.
Ok, tell Ramon I could be tempted out of Auckland but only if he assures me there will be a similar number of drinking establishments elsewhere.

  9. I reckon where you’ve managed to cycle to now cant legitimately get a place in the Eurovision song contest, so hello Asia!

Sounds like a PIMMS on the porch is in order. failing that then a vody for the body should be perfectly adequate. Hope the knee gets better soon Mary, I myself seem to be suffering from tennis elbow and I dont play tennis! But then again I guess you dont play avoid the big fuck off hay truck either, things just happen. Good to hear civil wars etc. have quietened down and you 2 are getting back into the hard work of having a great time.

    Enjoy

Tennis elbow is also known as Cock & Bulls’ arm is it not??!! Raising all those glasses repeatedly! Knee is healing well but I’m gonna scar I think! :( all part and parcel of the adventure, one friend we’ve made out here and keep bumping into said ‘Cooool, I love your leg Mary! You look like a proper tourer now!’ So that made me feel better!! xxx

  12. Hi guys, yeah I’m back at work again, Jacqui is enjoying a bit more time off though. Wish I was back on the saddle. Congratulations on getting the china Visa! Few comments from our extension experiance, we got our extensions in Jayauguan and Leshan. Both took 2 days. Jayauguan was a bit iffy…asked a lot of curly questions. Also Songpan was still doing extensions on the spot, but this might have changed due to issues up the road. our total kilometers for china on a similar route was approx 5,800. So you should be able to make it. good luck! let us know when you get to Oz

Hey Aaron! Hey Jacqui! Thanks for the info, we are more or less at the border and will cross in the morning to make the most of our visa days! Very excited to be on the cusp of the next big chunk of the trip I can tell you. We were lookig at your blog recently, can’t believe you are back home though, that seems surreal, I guess it does to you too. Will definately be in touch as we get closer to you, have no fear, and perhaps you’ll be ready for another adventure by then?? xxx
