LONDON – A British couple cycling around the world and chronicling their journey in a blog have been killed in a road accident in Thailand, Thai police said.
Peter Root and Mary Thompson died Wednesday when they were hit by a pickup truck on a road in Chachoengsao province, east of Bangkok.
The couple, both 34 and from Guernsey in the Channel Islands, left Britain in July 2011 and had cycled through Europe, the Middle East, Central Asia and China.
[Reply]
They had been posting photos and details of their trip on the website Two on Four Wheels.
Police Lt. Col. Supachai Luangsukcharoen said Monday that investigators found the bodies of the couple, their bicycles and belongings scattered on the roadside, along with a pickup truck that crashed between some trees.
Supachai said the truck driver, 25-year-old Worapong Sangkhawat, was seriously injured in the crash. He told police his truck hit the cyclists as he was reaching down to pick up a cap from the vehicle’s floor, Supachai said.
The driver has been released on bail and faces charges of causing death by dangerous driving, which carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in jail.
Police said the couple’s bodies were being kept at a rescue unit in Chachoengsao, 20 miles (30 kilometers) east of Bangkok.
Britain’s Foreign Office confirmed that two Britons died in Thailand on Feb. 13.

I read about this in the evening post whilst waiting for a take away in a curry house in Bedminster, Bristol, Uk. A tragic end to anyone’s life but all the more poignant when it’s such a vivacious and young couple, mid flow on a successful adventure… 2 people truly taking in our planet without the use of fossil fuels. You died too young… But you saw more than most will ever see. Peace, love and empathy. X

It’s kinda eery to see this website still up after the couples death. Anyway, R.I.P. world travelers.
[Reply]
I still enjoy reading about these adventures. I wish I would have known them! I know they were having the time of their lives! Heaven would be a continuation of their travels, and I hope they are riding on there. God speed and God bless.
[Reply]
Well, personally….. I think it is an incredibly brave move on the part of the families involved in this tragedy. Good on em I reckon!

I am myself a bike traveler although only on short journeys. I’ve learned about their tragic end through an other web site (Travelling Two) that I was following in early March.
I think it is very nice to keep up their web page as a remembrance of what they did and how they lived the last period of their lives.

A tragic news about the couple who died in a traffic accident. I have respect for those young people who made their dreams to reality. Their adventures have been stopped so prematurely by the negligence of a truck drivers. Myself as cyclists, I can say that the danger is always around the corner, often because there are too many irresponsible car driver on the way. Often cyclists need a lot of luck by travell.
Unfortunately, we living in a world where the car traffic have become high status in the human culture.
Car traffic is a killer machine, an invention which cause thousands of deaths each day in the world. A very strange and dangerous lifestyle that characterized the modern human people. This unsustainable car-lifestyle should get everyone to reflect. If you want to make a difference, and at the same time show solidarity to the couple Maria & Peter, an idea is to leave your car at home, and instead to use your bike.

I hope that this is read by Mary’s family. I had the privilege of working with Mary. She was one of THE nicest people I have ever met. ‘Scary’ was one of the ‘ladi anes what lunch’ gang.
Quite simply, I loved Mary. She brought Pete round for enchiladas and it was obvious how devoted to each other they were. A light went out in this world at the tragic loss of the beautiful serene funny gorgeous Mary

We’re down here in Bahia,Brazil, where we live. We’re bike lovers, bike is our main transport here. But everytime we use the road with our small open truck and we see a biker with bags and flags etc, we stop, we offer a ride mainly to get him off the road for a while and of course to help in any other way. Our house has also been often used by passing bikers around the world. It’s something realy special for us, someone who decides to hit the road around our planet this way….that is the best way to see it all! Unfortunately our world is getting more dangerous everyday…in every way. Beautiful example of Mary and Peter!! Will keep it in our hearts!

I never met Peter and Mary but I did spend a lot of time reading about their adventures. I still visit their website and think of them often. Even though I didn’t meet them they gave me inspiration and happiness. I often say a little prayer for them and they will continue to be in my thoughts, Jon x.

Dear Peter Roots and Mary Thomson’s Family
I am a Thai cyclist and I feel terribly sorry for the accident of you beloveds. The accident caused the ease of this extraordinary trip with no words. I, for the sake of a cyclist, feel enormously threatened by careless driving. And for a position of a father myself, I feel rotten for your families to send your beloved out to ride with no return.
The time durably passed, and people suddenly forgot, but for the long-gone loss of a family, it would never go away.
I and my Thai biker friend intend to do something for this incident, therefore, we came up with this project “อ้อมกอด หมื่นไมล์” “ Ten Thousand Miles Embrace” which is an alone-riding project for me to pedal from the accident scene to Guernsey, UK – the home of the beloved ones. In an intention of carrying out sorrow I have that I cannot save them from a basic danger. I would like to offer this embrace for all the Thais living on a faraway land to your families without any obligation for you to be binded.
I, therefore, notify you for the project.

Still thinking about your lives and how lucky you were to live your dream. I’m glad your site is still up… It is a reminder to me of how short life can be and how we should live out our dreams now. I think it would have been even more tragic to die cycling home from the local store. As it is, I hope your family knows how much you both have inspired people.
[Reply]
I agree. I haven’t had a chance to read about their journeys but I intend too.

Well, a little over a year since two families lost a son and daughter respectively. Personally, I hope both families are somehow moving forward and my thoughts are with you all.

I just read about this in the Bangkok Post, and I live in Bangkok since many years, cycling also. I am so impressed by this site and wish that I had met Mary and Peter. They seem like they were beautiful, joyful people, and the knowledge and beauty that they shared was a great gift to all of us. What a great legacy to leave. God bless their families.

I have just read about the awful tragedy. I hope that this site will be up for a while to commemorate this young people. At least they we’re living their life to the fullest. Prayers go to the Mum of Mary.

I was living in Bangkok and was following Mary and Peter online when I heard about the accident. I was shocked like everyone else. In January 2014, I set off from Bangkok to cycle around the world and often thought of them. On August 12, 2014, I was cycling in Oregon, USA and was hit by a truck. I had 14 broken ribs, a concussion, had knee surgery and other complications but I survived. It still pains me to think of Mary and Peter and how easily the same could have happened to me. Going through the accident with my family makes my heart ache for their families and what they went through. I think about them all the time even though we never met. God bless your families.

I wasn’t lucky enough to meet Mary and Peter but I did follow them via the blog daily and felt a true kinship towards them. They inspired me and I am currently on my own world tour having left the UK in April this year. I still often think of them and look at their wonderful adventure via this website. for many months i was devouring the website’s content and i remembered being totally enamored at their Iran video. I thot that was the video that push me towards “should i?” to “i will! and as i was prepping for my long haul tour, i read the dreadful news. i must admit, i am constantly worried that one day this site will disappear as probably no one will maintain the upkeep of the web hosting. gosh, its been already 4 years. peter & mary, i miss you guys
