Alpine Fresh

Surfing Munich. Surfers on the Eisbach stream running through the English Garden in Munich.

A relaxing week with our mates Hanna and Bibo in Denklingen, Southern Germany, is coming to an end and we’re now making plans for our imminent trans-alp bike ride from Germany through Austria and into Italy. Having had a taster of some of France’s hills in Alsace, 1000 metre high hills, we thought it would pay to do a bit of planning to avoid anything over 2000m high… not sure our legs are quite ready for that yet. H & B pointed us in the direction of viaclaudia.org, an amazingly useful website with detailed route info for cyclists, hikers etc… to plan ways through the Alps. At the moment it looks like we’ll be heading for Verona.

Bavarian Delicacies delicious ice cream incarnations of your favourite meals. Mary had the spaghetti ice cream, while I opted for the classic nut special.

Säuling Mountain Austria view from the lodge we stayed in, 1700m up in the mountains overlooking the Austrian town of Reuter.

Säuling Mountain Austria flattened 360° photo. A taste of things to come… no, not just loads more very Photoshopped photographs, but ridiculously steep mountains to ride over.

  1. Hey, if you can climb that spaghetti icecream mountain, then the Alps should be a doddle! But in all seriosity, The surfing looked fun ( from the safety of the bank! ), Austria looks amazing, everywhere that you show us does and I’m sure the way to Italy will be just as spectacular … best of luck!!! Love you lots xx

  2. Amazing ice creams and bloney expensive eh? I am so envious of you both going to Italy – my favourite country in the whole world so far.
Loving your photographs and very jealous of the fact that you can eat and drink as much as you like knowing that you will soon burn it off!
    Keep on pedalling you two
    Love you

  3. The view from the lodge you stayed in is pretty immense.
How long do you reckon it will take you to get to Italy? What will you do after that?

  4. Wow. That. Is. Beautiful. So envious! Spaghetti and ice cream! The views are okay too.

Love the surfing video – what’s going on there? Is it tidal, or just a lot of extra water? Looks like a lot of surfers for somewhere that’s a long way from the sea! That’s an impressive amount of dedication.

Your pics are fabulous, although seem a little short on tilt-shifted puppies. Ahem.
I saw a giant puppy called Olaf at the beach cafe on Saturday. He has his own FB page, apparently.

Feels like the end of the summer here. You haven’t missed a lot. I was on Radio Cornwall – didn’t make a total muppet of myself, I don’t think – I swam in an 800 metre race at Gylly – came a respectable not last, which was quite good as my racing line was a bit poor, and ended up swimming into one of the rescue paddleboards because I wasn’t looking where I was going.

Mostly you’ve missed a lot of riots. It’s like a depressing combination of GTA4: San Andreas and the early 1980s.

But then there are things like the riot wombles, where communities are coming together to clear everything up. And this:

    So it’s not all bad.

And I’m back in Bristol for a month or two soon, which is good. And the soundscape stuff is all coming together – will keep you posted.
This should probably be an email.

Have you been getting random texts from me?

With love and crossed-fingers for puncture-free freewheeling down those hills, J x
